It is Saturday morning and I get up usually at around 7:00am. This is late for me. During the week, I hit the floor at 4:00am to get in a workout and everything else that has to be done. You can guess that on Saturdays, I am quite willing to stay in bed longer. It is hard to push myself out of bed when there isn’t a strict deadline.
…But I have a schedule that I want to keep to. I still workout on Saturdays and on Saturday is when I do my main blog writing. Now you may not guess it, but it can be hard for me to get started on writing. I can be slow to get out of bed. I will fool around before I start my workout. I will sit down at the computer, check my email, click on some links, get distracted on Facebook, etc, etc….Basically anything to keep me from starting on writing.
How do I get started writing? I simply man up and start writing. I tell myself that I am going to write something, no matter how bad it might look on first pass. The first few minutes are hard, but then it starts to flow. The thing is, writing is important to me. I have to write.
That’s it. That’s how you stop procrastinating.
Just Do It.
Do or do not do. There is no try, young Skywalker. Start now.
Doesn’t Have to Be a Gut Check
Now everything you do doesn’t have to be a gut check. I am assuming that most things you do, you have a reason for doing them. If not, you need to reevaluate what' your priorities are.
The thing is, I like to write and I like to help people get things done. It brings me satisfaction.
What you don’t want is procrastination keeping you from things that you like and will benefit you. I believe that procrastination is one of the top things that keeps people fat, poor and unhappy.
The Procrastination Killer
So how do you kill procrastination? You pull the trigger on it. Really, you pull the trigger on yourself.
You need a trigger to get you going. That is how I man up and start writing. I know what I want to accomplish out of my life and have a little card beside my computer with some of my goals on it. It is a trigger to remind me to quit screwing around and get started.
The first year I was in the Army, I was on a long rucksack march. It was rather miserable – steel helmets, bad equipment, so on. We passed by a couple of Green Berets who had stopped their vehicle. I decided then I wanted to be Special Forces. I had a while to go, back then you had to be a Sergeant to try out. I had to be in better shape. So I found myself a trigger to keep me going. I bought a magazine about the Green Berets and whenever I started dawdling on my workouts or my path towards the SF Qualification Course, I pulled out the magazine and reminded myself of what I wanted. I still have this magazine.
Pull the Trigger on Yourself
So find things that will motivate yourself to get going. It could simple things like a certain ring that you can look at throughout the day. It can be a certain song that you can play before a meeting. It may be a food that will remind you to keep your diet plan. Whatever you pick, just pick something. Remember you don’t have to get it perfect. Just get started.
