Yesterday I went to a Celebration of Life for a friend of mine. My friend and I had been through several personal development workshops together. It was a great ceremony and by the number of people attending, he had touched many in his life. He was only a few years older than I and had been taken down by a heart attack while on a trip. It reminded me very much of the preciousness of life.
Now I talk a lot about goals and creating more in your life. I do believe this is important. At the same time, it is very important to enjoy what you have and not to spend all your time striving and looking towards the future. I think I have mentioned that I spent a lot of my military time while in very exotic and exciting places already concentrated on the next trip or next mission instead of enjoying/taking in where I was at that particular moment.
Feel Good Right Now
You have to be happy and grateful for what you have. I understand that a lot of us don’t have the best circumstances – bad/no job, debt, marriage problems, so on and so on. You have to realize how important it is to feel good right now. First of all you are going to miss a lot in life if you walk around in a constant spirit of discontent. You are going to miss the beauty in the world – the sunrises, sunsets, art, music – all of the these are something to be enjoyed and appreciated. You might not get another time to pass by that particular place. You are going to miss the joy in your children’s lives as they discover all the new things that are in front of them. You are going to miss the wins you do have. You will have wins, but with the attitude of misery, these will be clouded over and you will just continue on with the dark cloud over your head.
Be the Person You Want to Be Around
Probably the most important reason to feel good right now is that if you project an attitude of happiness and gratitude it will transmit to other people. I am not going to go all California Seminar on you now even though I believe there is something to the vibrations you give out are the vibrations you attract. What I am talking about is that if you are pleasant to be around, people are going to want to be around you. This touches every aspect of your life. You will find potential dates more open if you have a smile on your face. Potential customers or business partners want to do business with upbeat people. Your boss will trust you with more responsibility if you have the presence of positivity. The opposite of this is that if you continue to walk around in a state of unhappiness, people are going to avoid and not trust you to do things for them. Why should they give you their money/assignment/love/time if you haven’t done well for yourself?
What Do You Like?
You have probably already said, “That sounds great, but I am really miserable. How do change my attitude?”
The easiest way to be happy and project a positive attitude is to think of things you like. Take the mental image of things you like or even want. These could be things already in your life or things you want to have. It could be a type of car and you driving it over the type of roads you would love to explore. It could be you sitting in a wonderful restaurant enjoying the meal you really enjoy. Perhaps it is an activity – camping, fishing, hunting, or shopping. I bet when you get a mental picture of this, a smile comes to your face. It changes your state.
I do this myself. As part of my situational awareness, I monitor my own state. If someone cuts me off or a store clerk is rude and I feel my irritability level rising, I will bring myself back to a calm state with a vision of a favorite meal with my wife or a trip that I am planning. It works.
Change Your State and Enjoy Life
My friend had a full life. While I am sad to see him go, I know that he spent a lot of his life both chasing his dreams and enjoying the present. Make the effort. Be aware of your attitude and start living your life.
